It’s funny that for all the attention given to Harry’s birthday, only once are we ever told that it’s another character’s birthday. By the time Half-Blood Prince was released, we knew some of the other characters’ birthdays, thanks to the calendar on J.K. Rowling’s (still fairly new) website, but we had never seen a celebration of Ron’s birthday, or Hermione’s, Hagrid’s, or anybody else’s. They simply aren’t all that important to the story, I suppose; after all, it is Harry’s name on the cover.

On the other hand, maybe the other characters simply heard what happened to Ron when his birthday was mentioned, and petitioned Rowling not to have their own included, too….

So after a quick, one-chapter-long detour, it’s back to Hogwarts for Harry, and back to memory-watching for us. I love the insight these chapters give us, not just into Voldemort, but into Dumbledore – we learn what he’s been up to, what the focus of his life has been in recent years, and indeed a large part of why the Order of the Phoenix exists. After all, would you confide in the Ministry if you learned of the Horcruxes?

These chapters are also a big part of the reason that this is the first book in which Ron isn’t the second most-mentioned character after Harry (it’s Dumbledore instead; Ron is third). The focus of the series is turning away from the kids and towards the adults, and finally resting squarely on Voldemort.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, chapter seventeen: ‘A Sluggish Memory’

Of course in the seventh book the second most-mentioned character isn’t Dumbledore OR Ron, or Voldemort for that matter. Trivia question of the day – who is it?

Okay, so I have to admit that Christmas in May feels a little strange. But ultimately, I decided it was preferable to waiting another seven months for the next update to the site. ;) Or, I suppose, skipping this chapter and coming back to it much later….

At any rate, I have a distinct memory of the first time I read this chapter. It was when we lived in Charlotte, NC, and I was sitting on the futon in our second bedroom. And the reason I remember that that was where I was is because when I read the last line of the chapter – where Harry declares himself to be “Dumbledore’s man,” turns his back on the Minister of Magic, and walks back toward the house – I jumped up on top of the futon and screamed, proclaiming Harry’s awesomeness to anybody who happened to be in a neighboring apartment. I’d had this sort of reaction before with Dumbledore (i.e. Phineas’s “I disagree with Dumbledore on many counts, but you cannot deny he’s got style.”), but this was the first time I’d had it with Harry – and it really marks, I think, Harry’s coming into his own as a wizard, as a person, and as a force in the wizarding world. Amazing.

A few of you may have noticed this one yesterday – I posted the chapter yesterday afternoon but then got pulled away by a baby and didn’t have a chance to post the update (apologies!). But anyway, I figured it was time to move past the shipping wars once again and onto HBP15- so here it is!

There are so many things about this chapter that I love. I love Harry’s having to elude all the girls who are in love with him – and then asking out the only one who seemingly isn’t. I love Slughorn’s party (I mean, there are so many reasons an event like that wouldn’t happen in most modern schools). And I love the fact that Harry follows Snape and Malfoy to discover that – for a change – he was right about something! Such mystery and intrigue, and also the official halfway point of the book. Here goes nothin’….

I don’t think there are many people who would guess this, but the second-most-drawn chapter of the Harry Potter series (by my unscientific but nevertheless conclusive study) isn’t a climactic moment at the end of a book; or a Triwizard task; or even a chapter that bears particular relation to the plot of the books. No, the second most drawn chapter of Harry Potter is this one – little old HBP14 – wherein a good, old-fashioned, angsty teen relationship drama unfolds.

When the book was released, this chapter was something of a gift to a small but vocal segment of the fan population, for whom the relationship drama (that had thus far been fairly slow to develop) was by far the most important outcome of the characters’ lives. Some feelings were certainly hurt – including by Rowling herself, who had a laugh with some interviewers about the “delusional” nature of fans who had incorrectly predicted the future of her characters. But when the dust settled, this small but important subplot had jumped a long way forward, and we could all settle down, move on from our distraction, and get back to fighting Voldemort again.

Not unlike Harry and his friends, come to think of it. ;)

Time for Harry’s second meeting with Dumbledore, and if the memory of the Gaunts was interesting, well… let’s just say this one has them beat. I get chills every time I read this chapter, when I see what Tom Riddle was like at age eleven and just think about the things he grew up to do. And to be standing in the room, even just in a memory, is to almost feel as though it could have been prevented, somehow… *shivers.* It also makes me wonder what certain horrible people in our world would have been like as children, and if there would have been some way to know… not to shut them off from society, but to somehow prevent…. it’s a great mystery, and a scary one – that will likely never be solved. Fortunately, thanks to the Pensieve, things are a tiny bit easier for Harry, though.

I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on the current banner artwork, which was drawn by the wonderful Gnatkip and which I added to the site a couple of weeks ago along with HBP9. As it turns out, this is the tenth different drawing I’ve used for the header bar on the site (and I have at least five or six more in the works). So I thought I’d pull together a page highlighting the various looks this site has had over time, since there isn’t a way to go back to the old images. For some it might be a trip down memory lane, and for others a view of the site they never saw before (you can also watch the main page change over time). So for those interested, here’s the link:
HPC Banners

I’ve also added a permalink to the FAQ page.

Her drawing of the Gaunt house was part of HBP10, so a warm welcome to yuu!

This next chapter is something of a table-setter; there’s not a lot of action (though the Quidditch trials are certainly entertaining) but loads of plotlines are set up for the remainder of the book. As a result, while there’s not a lot to be said about it in the moment, it’s still worth paying close attention to…. ;)

The night that Half-Blood Prince was released was a memorable one for me. My wife and I went to a midnight release party with some friends, but our purchasing of the new book was complicated by the fact that my father had generously pre-ordered one for us through Amazon. So, with a copy set to arrive the next morning, we decided it would be wasteful to buy two copies at the midnight release party, and just got one. She then went to bed when we got home as I stayed up reading (I still owe her for that one).

The complicated part, though, came in the morning, when she had a 6am flight to Boston, whereas I was staying behind at home. I had only gotten through about two-thirds of the book by this point, but had to give her the copy we’d bought so that she could read it – and I spent the rest of the morning waiting for FedEx to show up with the second copy. Thus I spent many hours that morning trying to sleep and instead thinking about Harry, Dumbledore, and, of course, our newfound knowledge of Tom Riddle, wondering what Dumbledore’s excursions into the Pensieves were all about.

The book finally showed up around 1pm (after an excruciating seven hours – I couldn’t go online either, for fear of spoilers!), and I started over and read it cover to cover when it arrived. But to this day, one of my favorite parts of the book is Dumbledore’s giving Harry the backstory of Tom Riddle’s life, which I spent the better part of that morning thinking and wondering about. The pensieve scenes are fascinating, for so many reasons, and so important to the rest of the story. And I still think of that morning every time I read one. :)

Enjoy! Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, chapter ten: ‘The House of Gaunt’
