Aboard the Hogwarts Express
chapter eleven of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
After a hectic morning in which Arthur gets called away to help Mad-Eye Moody out of trouble, Molly takes the kids to King’s Cross, and they all take the Hogwarts Express to school. They don’t learn what’s going on at Hogwarts, much to Malfoy’s delight, but do talk a lot of Quidditch.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione set off to find seats, and were soon stowing their luggage in a compartment halfway along the train. Then they hopped back down onto the platform to say good-bye.

about the chapter
Something to Remember
A quick look back to chapter one reminds us that Voldemort was planning some sort of action after “the Quidditch World Cup is over.” The World Cup has been over for about a week now, as Harry and his friends head back to school, so it’s worth thinking about again: what is it, exactly, that Voldemort was planning to do?
The Final Word
“We’ve all met [Draco Malfoy]. He is a bully of the most refined type in that, unlike Dudley, Harry’s cousin, who’s a physical bully, but really not bright enough to access all your weak points, Draco… knows exactly what will hurt people. And the scary… but predictable thing is, that most of the children I meet say they know him – or they know her, because you get female Malfoys as well…. I’ve met about three. I knew one at school, and I’ve known them since; they don’t seem to disappear as you get older, unfortunately. But that’s a facet of life that you’ve got to deal with and I think that children actually actively enjoy watching Harry and his friends deal with it.”–J.K. Rowling, October 1999

It’s great to read Jo’s comment and then think about how the relation between Harry and Malfoy evolves and ends trough the series

I love Chantelle’s drawing of Hogwarts. I would be interested to see what it would look like with color.

Two things:
1- We are “introduced” to Mad-Eye Moody.
2- We learn about another way of communication between wizards, besides owls: Floo.

Paula: I think we were introduced to the Floo network in Chamber of Secrets (isn’t that how the Weasleys and Harry went to Diagon Alley?), but this book is the first time we are introduced to the Portkey, and it’s also the first time we are given a name to the “popping in/out of thin air” … Apparation.

First time we’re introduced to the idea of heads travelling into other people’s fires, is I think what Paula means, Ayesha. It’s the same effect as Floo powder, but I don’t think it’s been confirmed that it’s the same process.

I think Voldemort was waiting until after the World Cup to attach Mad-Eye Moody. He couldn’t risk sneaking Barty Crouch, Jr. out before then because of all the security. (At least that’s what I’ve always thought.)

Draco can be stupid sometimes too. Like his lovely nickname for Harry: “Potty”. Wow, that was clever, Draco. Honestly!

A lot gets said about Draco and what a snob he is but this acorn didn’t fall far from the tree (and that tree was no oak either). Lucius is a grown-up version of Draco. He taunts the Weasleys in exactly the same way and feeds Draco the latest tidbits knowing full well, Draco will use them to put down his classmates. It’s all a game of one-upmanship

How do Molly and Bill know about the Triwizard Tournament when it is “classified information until the Ministry decides to release it?”
